Dr. Andrew Martin

Dr. Andrew R. Martin is a Professor jointly appointed in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta, and the Director of the Aerosol Research Laboratory of Alberta (ARLA).

He is licensed as a Professional Engineer by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). He has worked previously in industrial R&D, in North America and overseas, on projects related to medical device development, inhalation drug delivery, and clinical and preclinical programs investigating new applications of therapeutic gases in medicine.

In industry and academia, Dr. Martin has been actively involved in the research community. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery and Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery. He serves as Scientific Advisor for the annual Drug Delivery to the Lungs conference series, and is Co-Chair of the Imaging, Modeling, and Physiology Networking Group of the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM).

He has published widely on diverse topics related to aerosols and gases in medicine, regularly presents at international conferences, and is lead or co-inventor on multiple granted patents.

He has received a number of prestigious international awards in recognition of his research contributions, including the ISAM Willi Stahlhofen Award (2023; co-recipient), the Drug Delivery to the Lungs Emerging Scientist Award (2022), and the ISAM Young Investigator Award (2013). He is also a two-time recipient of the University of Alberta Innovation Award (2024; 2022), recognizing his commitment to creating impact through technology transfer.
