R&D Engineering Intern

Maximilian Aisenstat is a R&D Engineering Intern at Pulmvita through the Mitacs Accelerate program. Max is passionate about global health, medical, and respiratory research and technology, and has been thrilled to be working at Pulmvita over the last nine months, where he does in vitro testing, design work, prototyping, and other R&D activities. Currently, Max is designing a smart oxygen sensor for Pulmvita that can track breathing rates and oxygen pulse timings from portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) in real-time.

Max earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical/biomedical engineering and his master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta. During his undergraduate studies, Max was involved with vehicle project teams, including the Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Project (ARVP) and AlbertaSat. He and his capstone project team won the Scovan Engineering Prize in Design Project Management for their design of a Honey-Wax Separator Centrifuge.

In his master’s degree, Max studied particle engineering for respiratory and nasal deliverable thermostable vaccines and pharmaceuticals He worked with international collaborators to spray dry, manufacture, and conduct stability studies on inhalable and nasal dry powder vaccines for tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19.

Outside of work, Max enjoys playing volleyball with the Edmonton Sport and Social Club (ESSC) and is both a chorister and Vice President of western Canada’s largest francophone choir, Chorale Saint Jean.
